5 Colors You Need To Start Wearing Now

APPLE PODCASTS | SPOTIFY | STITCHER

Colors have the power to bring out your best… and your worst. While this argument could be made for ALL the things we wear, nothing impacts the visual impression we make more than color. The right hues can make you look younger, more refreshed, attractive, and even trustworthy. When you’re wearing your best colors, you’re bound to receive more compliments even on your “worst” days.

All of that said, I know color can seem complicated. And the industry as a whole doesn’t offer much guidance in this department. Fashion trendsetters like celebrities and style bloggers obviously wear what works for them, but they never really explain whether it might work for you or how to confidently figure that out for yourself. Magazines and the media perpetuate myths like “black is slimming” —which can be true, but not always— and they push color trends without considering how this information will impact and potentially mislead you.

So all of this means you end up with a basic black or all-neutral wardrobe or you waste precious time and money buying and trying on colors that don’t flatter you.

In this episode, I’m empowering you to embrace more color in your wardrobe with good reason and greater confidence. And I’m doing my best to guide you by offering personalized tips and recommendations. So without further ado, let’s explore 5 colors you need to start wearing now and the psychological reasons why.

#1 – YOUR EYE COLOR

If you don’t know, now you know: your eye color is EVERYTHING.  Here’s why:

  • Wearing your eye color close to your face (think a blouse, scarf, necklace, etc.) draws the focus right to your eyes.  How perfect is that in today’s Zoom and IG reels era?
  • No matter what your eye color is, it’s the perfect one to wear for sales videos, client meetings, coffee chats, or anytime you want to maintain top-notch communication and eye contact!
  • Psychologically speaking, wearing your eye color helps you appear more approachable, credible, and trustworthy.

How ‘bout them apples?

Your eye color will always look amazing on you, so don’t stress over your skin tone or personal coloring for this one!  My only advice is to choose a color similarly or LESS vibrant (or saturated) than your eyes.  Otherwise, your pretty peepers might look dull in comparison.  And the goal here is to make them shine.

If your eyes are hazel or multi-dimensional, choose the most prominent color or experiment a bit until your find your favorite eye-tone options.

#2 – YOUR BEST WHITE

Key word: your

While you might think of true, bright white as a staple color that should be in everyone’s wardrobe, it’s not always the best choice for us (present company included).

Wearing a white that doesn’t compliment your skin tone (meaning it’s too warm or cool) or that’s brighter than your teeth and the whites of your eyes can make you look:

  • Older
  • Tired
  • Unhealthy
  • Lifeless

Doing this also enhances dark under eye circles, age spots, and discolored teeth.  Eek!

Instead, choose a white that works with your personal coloring to enhance your features and freshen your appearance.  Play around with different whites from warm sandstone and champagne to cooler options like oyster and porcelain until you discover what lights you up!

YOUR best white is always an excellent addition to your wardrobe as it can be either casual or chic, depending on the fabric (think a beautiful silk blouse verses a classic cotton tee), and pairs effortlessly with everything.

#3 – YOUR BLUSH COLOR

Did you know it’s been statistically proven that your blush color and best red are the most attractive colors you can wear?  This is true for both women and men.

If you’re throwing your hands up in the air because you HATE to wear pink (don’t worry, you can still sit with me!), hold your protest.  Most of us don’t look our best in bubble gum pink.  But I’ve found that even my most resistant clients are quick to fall in love with their best versions of blush, which can range from peach to mauve to coral and everywhere in between.

Choose the natural blush color in your skin tone.  If you’re not someone with rosy toned cheeks, just take a peek in the mirror the next time you feel flushed (think after an intense workout or a really hot shower).

Whenever you dress yourself in this hue, you’ll feel romantic, approachable, and feminine.  It’s an obvious choice for date night and works well for any garment or accessory, lingerie, blush and even a subtle lipstick.

#4 – YOUR LIP COLOR (or a shade darker)

Your natural lip color is usually a good indicator of your best red.  Like with your blush color and best white, you’ll want to determine whether your personal coloring errs on the cool, neutral, or warm side.  Consider colors beyond classic, cherry red, like cinnamon, hibiscus, and burgundy wine.

Matching your wardrobe or accessories to your lip color or a shade darker (for a touch of drama!), will give you a romantic, powerful, and ultra persuasive vibe, psychologically speaking.  It’s best for any article of clothing, accessory, more eye-catching lingerie, and lipstick – duh.

#5 – YOUR HAIR COLOR

The last color you need to start wearing now is your hair color!  There’s nothing more chic than a head-to-toe, monochromatic outfit that relates back to your hair color.  If you have lots of dimension or multiple colors (like highlights, for example), choose the most prominent one to echo in your clothing.  Or turn to your natural hair color if you want to make sure it works with your complexion and is truly flattering from head-to-toe.

Just like with your best white, your hair color can look casual or formal depending on the fabric and styling.  It’s also a perfect option for accessories and grounding pieces like pants, shoes, a handbag, or belt.

From casual to chic pieces, you can work these 5 colors into your wardrobe in an endless number of ways. To quickly recap, we talked about embracing your eye color, your best white, your blush and lip colors, and your hair color into your wardrobe and all of the reasons why. I bet some of them surprised you!
